Electricity Comparison
Queensland's electricity providers range from large retailers serving hundreds of thousands of customers to smaller niche operators. This article breaks down the top electricity retailers in Queensland by residential customer numbers, using the latest data from the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). It's designed to help you understand who supplies the market — and what to consider when comparing plans.
Data source: AER Retail Performance Data – Schedule 2, Q1 2025–26 (July–September 2025 quarter), published 24 December 2025.
Ergon Energy is Queensland's largest electricity retailer by residential customer numbers, serving 648,588 customers — a 29.26% market share. It operates under government-regulated prices in regional Queensland, set by the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA).
The top three are Ergon Energy (29.26%), Origin Energy (26.41%), and AGL (16.97%). Together, they supply over 72% of all residential electricity customers in Queensland.
Highly concentrated. The top six retailers — Ergon Energy, Origin Energy, AGL, Alinta Energy, EnergyAustralia, and Red Energy — collectively supply almost 90% of residential electricity customers in the state.
The table below shows the ten largest electricity retailers in Queensland, ranked by residential customer numbers. These figures come from the AER's Schedule 2 dataset for Q1 2025–26, covering the July–September 2025 quarter.

Together, these ten retailers supply over 94% of Queensland's residential electricity customers.
A few patterns stand out when you look at the data closely.
Ergon Energy, Origin Energy, and AGL alone account for over 72% of all residential electricity customers in Queensland. That's nearly three in every four Queensland households.
Add Alinta Energy, EnergyAustralia, and Red Energy to the mix, and the concentration becomes even clearer. The remaining 10%+ is spread across more than a dozen smaller retailers.
Ergon Energy Retail operates in regional Queensland and, by law, is only permitted to sell electricity at the Queensland Government's regulated prices, as set by the QCA under the Uniform Tariff Policy. This means its large customer base reflects geographic coverage rather than competitive market pricing alone.
A retailer with a large customer base is not necessarily cheaper or better suited to your needs. Plan value depends on your usage, location, and whether you have solar panels, a smart meter, or a controlled load tariff.
These retailers hold smaller shares of the Queensland market — each supplying less than 1% of residential customers. They are still active participants in Queensland's electricity retail landscape.

Some of these providers operate in niche segments — for example, some supply electricity primarily through embedded networks (such as apartment complexes or retirement villages), which can result in smaller reported residential customer bases.
Ergon Energy is Queensland's largest electricity retailer by residential customer numbers, with 648,588 customers and a 29.26% market share, based on AER data for Q1 2025–26 (July–September 2025).
Ergon Energy Retail primarily serves customers in regional Queensland. Its pricing is regulated by the QCA under the Queensland Government's Uniform Tariff Policy. Customers in South East Queensland are generally served by competitive market retailers like Origin Energy, AGL, and others.
In this context, market share refers to the proportion of residential electricity customers a retailer supplies in Queensland, based on customer numbers reported to the AER. It does not reflect pricing, plan quality, or customer satisfaction.
Some competition exists in parts of regional Queensland, but the retail electricity market is generally less competitive than in South East Queensland. If you live in a regional area, it may be worth contacting electricity retailers directly or using comparison tools such as Energy Made Easy or electricityprovider.com.au to check which plans may be available at your address based on their panel of retailers.
The AER publishes retail performance data quarterly. The most recent dataset at time of writing is Q1 2025–26 (July–September 2025), published on 24 December 2025. The data includes customer numbers, switching rates, and other market metrics across NEM jurisdictions.
You'll be placed on a standing offer contract by your retailer. In SEQ, this is subject to DMO pricing. According to the ACCC, around 90% of households are currently on market offers rather than standing offers. Customers on standing offers may be paying more than those who have actively compared and switched to a competitive market offer.
Not necessarily. All retailers operating in Queensland must be authorised under the National Energy Retail Law and comply with the National Energy Retail Rules. Smaller customer numbers don't indicate lower reliability. If you have concerns about a specific retailer, check the AER's retail register or contact EWOQ.
